Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions.
The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete. The term may also be used, less correctly, to describe hybrid martial arts styles.
Modern MMA has it’s in both Brazilian Vale Tudo, the 1993 founding of the Ultimate Fighting Champion, and Japan’s rich shoot wrestling history. Initially based on style vs style combat, competitors of various arts were pitted against one another with minimal rules for safety.
In the following decade, MMA promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport. Today mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport in the world, with pay per views rivalling both boxing and professional wrestling.
Growing far beyond style vs style, Mixed Martial Artists today are well rounded fighters, comfortable fighting both standing and on the ground. Diesel Gym has a unique approach to MMA, blending technical Thai-style striking and unorthodox grappling techniques from Eddie Bravo’s 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu. The Diesel Team has won numerous mixed martial arts titles on their way to the top and our top fighters have gone on to compete in the UFC and Bellator.
We also hold the distinction of being one of the only gyms in the world to pursue titles in all of our combat sports disciplines, including MMA, Thai Boxing and Jiu Jitsu.
